Climate Types

   

According to the CIA Factbook the climate of New Zealand is temperate with sharp regional contrasts.  There are distinct changes in seasons during the year but temperatures changes are quite mild due to the surrounding bodies of water.

Uniformity of Climate

Similar to Hawaii, New Zealand has different climates based on where you are on the island. Some places can be extremely wet while others are semiarid and subtropical. New Zealand also recieves snow  in early June until early October on the south island. Snow is much less common on Te Ika-a-Maui.

       

             Annual Range of Temperature and Precipitation 

Auckland and the Capital Wellington

For Auckland the annual range for temperature in Celsius is 23.7 in February and 7.1 in July.  Precipitation is 145mm in July and 66.1mm February. The capital of New Zealand, Wellington, has an annual temperature of 20.6 in February and 6.3 in July. Precipitation is 69.8 mm in February and 137.5mm in July.

Comparison of Wellington and Honolulu

Honolulu is hotter and drier than New Zealand with an average temperature high of 31.5 in August and an average low of 21.9 in October. Honolulu receives much less precipitation with a high of 82mm in December and a low of 7mm in June.

Seasonality

 There are distinct changes in seasons during the year but temperatures changes are quite mild due to the surrounding bodies of water. New Zealand has less seasonality than New York, but more seasonality than Hawaii.
